How To Find The Best Rehab Center In Your Area: Tips and Considerations

Taking the first step to enter a rehab program for substance abuse is often a difficult decision and can feel overwhelming when looking at treatment options. However, enrolling in a rehab and sticking to the treatment course has a 30% to 70% recovery success rate [1].

Recovery success rates vary and are influenced by the quality of the rehab, such as staff, credentialing, specialties, and services offered. These are just a few things to consider when deciding on a rehab that meets your health and recovery needs.

Local Rehab vs Destination Rehab: Why Location Matters

The first decision is whether to stay local in the area or go to a destination rehab. A destination rehab is a treatment center located in a different geographical location from one’s hometown. They are often located in peaceful, desirable settings such as by the beach or in the mountains.

The location of a rehab center can significantly impact one’s recovery journey. Rehab close to one’s home provides easy access, convenience, and connections to local resources. However, destination rehabs also provide their own set of benefits. Both options have pros and cons.

Local Rehab

Pros:

  • Easier to attend and convenient
  • More affordable (usually covered by insurance)
  • Access to local resources
  • Family support
  • Aftercare services

Cons:

  • Less privacy
  • Limited treatment options
  • Lack of specialization or personalized care
  • Triggers or temptations of being in one´s home environment

Destination Rehab

Pros:

  • More privacy
  • Away from the home environment and potential triggers
  • Harder to leave and go home, reinforcing commitment to treatment
  • Potential for specialized programs

Cons

  • More expensive and not usually covered by insurance
  • Away from family and support networks
  • Lack of aftercare services or local resources for continuing care

Key Factors to Consider When Comparing Rehab Centers

Once you have decided whether to attend a local rehab or go somewhere further from home, there are a few other key factors to consider when comparing the options.

Accreditations and Licenses

A high-quality rehab holds accreditations and has a license. These allow them to treat substance abuse and co-occurring mental health problems in the designated state. They also ensure that rehabs are following up-to-date treatment and safety protocols. You can usually find these on the center’s website or ask their admissions team for information.

Reputable accreditations that many luxury rehab centers have include:

  • The Joint Commission
  • LegitScript
  • SAMHSA
  • NAMI
  • CARP
  • National Association for Behavioral Healthcare

Staff Ratio and Credentials

Check to make sure the staff has proper credentials. Typical medical or mental health personnel at a rehab might include licensed professional counselors (LPCs), licensed social workers (LSWs), licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs), medical doctors (MDs), and nurse practitioners (NP).

Also, look for a rehab with high staff-to-client ratios. This allows clinicians to dedicate more time to each patient and create personalized treatment plans.

Treatment Modalities

Look at the rehab center’s website to see what kind of treatment modalities they offer. Some rehab programs follow the 12-step approach and offer standard substance abuse counseling. However, a growing number of rehabs are offering evidence-based therapies to address underlying mental health and behavioral problems that drive substance abuse.

Some common treatment modalities in rehab include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT helps patients reframe negative thoughts that drive addiction, develop positive coping skills, and set recovery goals.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT):  DBT helps manage negative emotions that increase destructive behaviors such as substance abuse. It focuses on four key concepts, including distress tolerance, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.
  •  Trauma Therapy: Trauma-informed therapies use the principles of trauma-informed care, such as safety, collaboration, and empowerment, to help patients process trauma that drives addiction and reduce associated emotional distress.

Insurance and Cost

Most rehab centers have admissions teams available 24/7 to help you or a loved one verify benefits. If your insurance does not cover treatment, many centers work with providers or can create a payment plan based on individual financial needs.

Levels of Care Offered

It’s important that the rehab you choose offers the level of care needed for where you are in your recovery journey. For example, not every rehab program offers detox, while others only offer detox and residential (no outpatient). A comprehensive rehab program usually has several levels of care that include:

  • Detox: Initial step of addiction recovery that involves removing drugs and alcohol from the body in a safe, medically supervised setting.
  • Residential: Also known as inpatient rehab, this is the highest level of care. During residential treatment, patients live 24/7 at the facility, participating in medication management, daily individual therapy, group therapy, and structured therapeutic activities.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): This is a step down from residential. Patients participate in intensive daily therapies, similar to residential, but return home in the evenings. Most PHPs meet every weekday for 6 to 8 hours.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): This outpatient program offers patients more flexibility than in a residential program or PHP, but more structure than standard outpatient services. Patients usually meet multiple times a week, for a few hours at a time, participating in similar therapies and activities they would during residential.

Aftercare and Relapse Prevention

An essential element of long-term recovery is supporting individuals after they complete treatment. Aftercare services help patients continue implementing the skills they learned in rehab as they transition back to independence and daily routines.

Aftercare is also an important part of reducing the risk of relapse. Effective rehab programs develop aftercare plans, which may include connecting patients to:

  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
  • Ongoing behavioral therapy
  • Ongoing medication management
  • 12-Step Program like NA or AA
  • Peer support program
  • Alumni network

Family Involvement

It’s important for people in substance abuse treatment to keep in contact with loved ones, rebuild strained relationships, and develop a positive support system during treatment. Research shows that involving family in the treatment process improves successful recovery outcomes [2].

Rehab centers often maintain open lines of communication between providers, patients, and their loved ones. They also offer family therapy, allow loved ones to visit, and host events for patients, their families, and alumni.

Holistic Approach to Healing

Effective substance abuse treatment requires a holistic approach that focuses on one’s mental, physical, and spiritual health. Besides behavioral therapies and medication management, many rehabs also offer holistic healing to relieve stress, improve emotional well-being, and manage cravings for drugs and alcohol. Some holistic activities you might participate in during rehab include:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Fitness activities and sports
  • Nutritional guidance
  • Massage therapy
  • Life skill training (cooking classes, managing finances, house maintenance)
